Hikaru, emo being emo won't hold eny 13 year old wannabe from calling that sick pop/rock "emo".
Just deal with it and say your stuff is "real emo" and what everyone else knows as emo, let's call that emo.
Makes it all a lot easier imo.

Grunge anyone?
Same thing happend there too... the whole rock scene from Seattle got totally distorted out of porportion because of that one word. It was good for the bands that were struggling to make a breakthru... but it hyped a new scene and generation into being something that they were not. That again, thanks to MTV.
To me, music is eather good or bad, but I never try to put a label on any style or band.
just my 2,36291 cents

my chemical romance, panic at the disco etc are aload of shit. they're not rock, or metal. they're just wannabe metal bands, that appeal to teenage girls and gay kids.

Emo music is crap tbh. I'm not really fond of it,
I have a step-sister who is "emo", so I know what todays definition of emo is fine. Pretty easy, most of them are quiet, hate Chav's, Ned's, Trendy's, Derry's. I'm not sure about Sk8 folk but my sis dislikes them Listen to pretty much all the same bands, My Chemical Romance, Jimmy Junior or whatever his name is, its an new one out, Panic at the disco. Load of shit imo,
If they want proper punk/emo/hardcore. Go back to the 80's. Anti-nowhere league, the 4skins. That kind of stuff, when goth and punk was alive. Some classic songs I've heard.
Its kind of a crap excuse to say "I'm being me". Your not being you, your wearing the same kinda clothes as every other "emo" out there, and into the same music, and all hate your "Ned-Beats" (AKA Dj Rankin, Dj Tiesto (Yes, not a mistake) Dj Cammy, Dj Pulse, Dj NitGitAClue....)
Now don't get me wrong, because of this I don't hate emo's. I get on with both of my sisters fine (The other one is a goth.)
In a summary, its just this day and age, like before your had your punks, and goths. I guess this is the emo age. Next Gen will see something else just as stupid. But hey, its a trend and it'll soon die off.

Another decent reply.
I don't give a crap about genres or the culture behind any type of music, if it's good (albeit at times bands such as, Lost Prophets for example, sell out...changing the music to fit a market) and has meaning or a feeling.
